Budget Hotel Accommodations In Jamaica

Going to Jamaica may seem like a dream outside of most people’s vacation finances, but it is possible to visit this beautiful island on a budget. The trick is to find the right kind of accommodation in the right area. Surprisingly there are a number of comfortable budget hotels on the island where you can get a good night’s sleep at very reasonable rates.

For example, the Blue Harbor Hotel situated in Montego Bay is a small hotel with 25 rooms designed especially for the honeymooning couples – putting Jamaica within your wedding budget. The Blue Harbor is located only a convenient 15 minute drive from the airport. The rooms available are usually large and air-conditioned with spacious balconies and telephones. You can enjoy lavish food from the restaurant which offers the best cuisine from all over the world.

Budget accommodation in Negril includes the Negril Yoga Center which has rooms and cottages – most of which have fans and fridges (and where you can get yoghurt and other produce that staff make on the premises), and Roots Bamboo which is where you’ll find cabins situated right beside the beach. Roots Bamboo offers more of a camping experience with live music being played regularly, whereas the quieter Yoga Center is a favorite with women traveling with children. There are a number of other budget accommodation establishments in the area which cater for people who fall within the two extremes but these two show the wide variety of accommodation available.

If you prefer to stay in Jamaica’s capital, Kingston’s Mountain Edge Guest House is set up on the hillside of the Blue Mountains, 3,500 ft above sea level. There are 3 cottages with double beds and attached bathrooms. A small roadside bar, trail to the river and a hot tub in the garden complete the onsite features, but the guest house also offers mountain bikes if you want to be a little adventurous and venture further afield.

As you can see from the Mountain Edge Guest House, some budget hotels are set further away from Jamaica’s beaches, but there are some closer to the action – it really depends on what you’re looking for and what you’re willing to pay. Also, if you are hiring a car on your Jamaican vacation, being a few miles up into the mountains won’t be a problem as you’ll be able to drive down to the beaches whenever you’re ready and can escape the tourists when you’ve had enough!

Couples Only Jamaica Vacations

If you’re a couple looking for the perfect holiday destination, Jamaica is a great choice. With miles and miles of beautiful beaches, romantic ambience and great food the real world may seem over half a world away.

Many of the hotels in Jamaica are classily designed to create a relaxing atmosphere for your vacation, and some of them are exclusive to couples only so you’ll find the emphasis is on romance rather than kids’ clubs and nightly singles specials!

At White Sands in Negril even the name suggests serenity and this is matched by the ambience of the hotel. Situated on one Negrils more secluded beach corners this hotel is located near to the city and yet offers good accommodation at affordable prices for those couples who prefer a quiet vacation. Couples can enjoy either spacious one bedroom apartments or deluxe rooms depending on their budget.

The Jamaica Inn, Ocho Rios has cottages set up on a bluff with stunning ocean views. With their tastefully decorated blend of Jamaican/Indonesian styles, the cottages are private but they are close to the main Inn building so that couples can use the amenities there if they desire. Honeymooners may be interested in the Blue Cottage which is part of the Jamaica Inn complex, but is a one-bedroom cottage on the beach!

One of the most popular “chain” resorts that caters only for couples is Sandals. Located in seven different locations around Jamaica, you’re sure to find a Sandals resort that offers you not only the amenities and privacy you want for your romantic couples vacation, but also have it in an area surrounded with activities and places that you want to experience together. Sandals is also experienced in helping couples get married so if you’re intending to be married – or it’s just something that comes up and you’ve got the necessary paperwork – their staff will be able to help you plan a special day!

Couples vacation in couples only resorts for many different reasons. Sometimes it’s because they prefer the company of other couples, occasionally it could be because they find it awkward or embarrassing to be seated at a table with single people, or it could be that they’ve finally escaped their own children and don’t want to be bothered with someone else’s. Whatever the reason you’re choosing a couples only holiday, you’ll have a great time in Jamaica.

Jamaica is a tourist country. In fact, the biggest part of the countries economy is tourist based. However, if you want to truly experience Jamaica, after you have hit all the tourist hot spots; take it off the beaten path.

For a real look at Jamaica, head towards the interior. It is, however, a bad idea to take off on your own. Ideally, you should hire a car and driver through your hotel. This way, you will be safer, as the driver won’t take you to any dangerous locations – and the hotel will ensure that you get a good driver because your safety is important to them.

You can be sure that the driver will have numerous suggestions of places to go and see. You should note that he has probably set up some deals with various vendors – he gets a small fee from the vendor when he brings them customers. This is okay, and many of the places will be interesting. Note, however, that you can also ask him to take you to specific places as well.

To truly experience Jamaica, ask your driver to take you to various villages, where you can really get a sense of how people live in this beautiful country. This will give you the opportunity to see Jamaica in action, away from the tourism. You might want to start with the free villages, where you will find descendants of the Maroons.

The Maroons were African slaves that ran away from the farms and plantations that they were brought to. They were of course chased, but capture was difficult as it seemed that they had advanced warfare tactics. In fact, they were so good at avoiding capture and exacting revenge when they were attacked, that they were declared a free people in 1739 and given 1500 acres of land to call their own – long before slavery was abolished.

The free villages are Sligoville, Sturge Town, Clarksonville, Buxton, Goodwill, Granville, Kettering, Maidstone, Salem, and Time and Patience. But the original Maroon villages are Nanny Town, Moore Town, Accompang, and Seaford Town. If you can’t see them all, try to visit one or all of these four.

In all villages of Jamaica, you will find very close-knit families. Unlike other countries, where children grow up and move on with their lives, Jamaican children still heed their parent’s advice and wishes. They are expected to get an education, and to marry for life.

Also, don’t allow the term ‘village’ to fool you. Don’t expect to see women fetching water and carrying it in bowls on their heads. Most villages in Jamaica are now modernized, but still manage to hold their past rustic charm.

You may also be interested in hitting some of the tourist type spots that are not overrun with crowds, such as plantations, lighthouses, archeological digs, caves, cemeteries, churches, clock towers, forts, schools, mineral spas, parks, statues and memorials. Really think about all that there is to see, and talk with your hotels concierge. Let him know that you are interested in seeing other parts of Jamaica, aside from the usual tourist attractions. The chances are very good that he can help you design an itinerary for this.

The Castleton Botanical Garden is located in St. Mary. It was established in 1862, and has a wide variety of plants. The garden was originally home to more than four thousand plants that originated from the English Garden at Kew. Special plants that were first introduced to Jamaica, starting here, include Navel Orange, Tangerine, Spathodea, Bombay Mango, and Poinciana. Here, you will also find Strychnos, which is what many medicines, as well as the poison Strychnine, are made of.

The Bath Botanical Gardens are much smaller than the Castleton Gardens, but they have historical value, as this was the second botanical garden to be developed in the western hemisphere. Bath is located in St. Thomas, but it was destroyed in the 19th century when the Sulphur River flooded. While it is still maintained, the project was relocated to Castleton in 1862.

The Cinchona Botanical Gardens were planted in 1868 in St. Andrew. Nothing is currently cultivated or studied here, however, there are plans to get things started here again in the near future. It is still worth a visit for the spectacular views of the Blue Mountains, the Liguanea Plains, Kingston, and Strawberry Hill.

The Hope Gardens were established in 1881 in St. Andrew, covering two hundred acres of the Hope Estate. The land was acquired by the Government for experimental gardening, where new varieties of sugar cane were planted, covering most of the gardens, with ten acres reserved for planting teak, Trinidad Cocoa, Pineapples, and Liberian Coffee.

The Clydesdale Gardens, in St. Andrew, has become a national park. It is very relaxing and secluded, and hidden in the hills of the Blue Mountains. Coffee was once produced here, and you can still see the water wheel and the barbecues.

Of all of the botanical gardens, the Castleton is the one that you definitely don’t want to miss, as this is the one that is still well maintained today. The Wag Water River runs through Castleton, and you are free to swim here.

There are other lush and beautiful parks throughout Jamaica that are not considered botanical gardens. These include the Hollywell National Park, National Heros Park, St. William Grant Park, Claude Stuart Park, Seville Heritage Park, Nelson Mandela Park, Wynter’s Park, Serenity Park, Independence Park, Blue Mountain Peak, and Long Mountain.

Of these parks, Blue Mountain Peak is not to be missed. From here, you can see points of the Caribbean Ocean as it meets Jamaica, and on a clear day, you can see all the way to Cuba. Seville Heritage Park is also something special. It is located in St. Ann, on the historic Seville Estate. Here, you will be able to view a collection of artifacts in the Great House from the Tainos culture, as well as the African and European cultures.

Kingston is full of activities for you to experience while you’re in Jamaica, from walking tours to festivals and from water sports to museums.

As far as festivities go the best way to find out what is going on is through the local daily paper, “The Gleaner” it’ll have a list of events going on while you are down there. In 2007 Kingston will be holding the Cricket’s World Cup, which is sure to bring in a lot of entertainment and tourists. March is a big month for festivals that’ll include a 3K walk, street dancing and then in April there’ll be a Road parade and a concert at the National stadium.

To make sure that you exercise off the extra calories consumed at one of the local restaurants with their tempting array of local cuisine, there are walking, hiking and biking tours. These are a great way to explore the city.

Blue Mountain’s peak is at 2,256 m. If you are looking to hike up to the summit with a group, prepare yourself to rise before the sun comes up. Blue Mountain treks begin around 1am, so book a night’s sleep nearby at Pine Grove, Whitefield Hall or Wildflower Lodge. If hiking really isn’t your thing, Blue Mountain Bicycle Tours will also take you up through the mountains. The best time of year to do this particular activity is from December thru April since it isn’t wet during these months. Always make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes and a warm jacket, and just because the sun doesn’t seem to be shining doesn’t mean you should leave the suntan lotion at home.

If none of these sounds exciting to you why not try your hand at snorkeling, diving, dancing, shopping, cruising or partying. There is fun to be had in Kingston during your Jamaican stay, all you have to do is decide what you want to do and then find where it’s at!
